The 2019 BMW X5 is now in its fourth generation. It now comes with slightly larger dimensions, more technology, more power and improved driver-assistance and safety features. This luxury SUV offers 2-axle air suspension and an off-road package that highlights its more rugged side. Yes, it is as rugged as Chuck Norris riding a horse in a desert. It still maintains its sports-sedan-like performance and athletic nature that helped it stand out from rivals like Mercedes-Benz GLE, Lexus RX and the Acura MDX. The X5 is available in 3-row/7- or 2-row/5-passenger configurations and with 8- or 6- cylinder engines. It starts over $60,000, making it pricier than most of its competitors.
The X5 continues to be manufactured in South Carolina. It has been refurbished to offer more complex driving features, more technology and slightly larger dimensions. An off-road package is also available for the first time in the brand’s existence in nearly 20 years.
Who will love it?
This vehicle is made for you if you are looking for a midsize-crossover-luxury SUV which has the attributes of a BMW sports sedan. You will love the numerous offerings of the vehicle, from massaging seats, a V8 engine and semi-autonomous driving. The X5 boasts of everyday practicality and impressive performance.
Who will hate it?
If you are looking for a cheap car then the X5 is not for you. It has a starting price of over $60,000. In fact, you are likely to add tens of thousands to this figure. It also lacks enough room in the last row to fit more than five passengers. The larger BMW X7 with 3 rows is the better choice if you have to regularly carry 5 people.
Where does the power come from?
There are two engines available in the BMW X5 [search label="luxury SUV" items="Porsche Cayenne|BMW X5|Audi Q8|Acura MDX"]. An inline 6-cylinder turbocharged engine comes standard in the xDrive40i; it offers 335 horsepower. On the other hand, the xDrive50i gets its juice from a twin-turbo V8 engine that delivers 456 horsepower. Both models work with 8-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. A new diesel X5 isn’t on offer at the moment. The X5 can tow up to 7,200 pounds. The vehicle can save fuel with the help of its auto start/stop system. The system can be disabled if you feel that the restarts are annoying.
What are the highs and lows of this vehicle?
The 2019 BMW X5 comes with a capable chassis, elegant cabin and a sweet inline-six. However, we don’t like that it has many costly options and overly familiar looks.
What about the exterior?
The new X5’s design is very similar to the original although it has been updated. The 4th-generation model is slightly bigger than the 3rd-gen X5. The width increases by 2.6 inches while the overall length has grown by just over an inch. The X5 has a beefier profile thanks to one more inch in height and an increased twin-kidney grille. The wheels range from the optional 22-inch rollers to the standard 19 inch wheels. Just like James Bond, the exterior has a crisp, clean appearance.
What does the interior offer?
This vehicle offers a seating capacity of five passengers in its two standard rows. You can get the option of a third row with two extra seats for $2,200 more. These extra seats can be occasionally used by children. The second and first rows are quite spacious. Up front, the X5 maintains its reputation of being relatively minimal, sophisticated, elegant and clean. It has a HD touch screen that measures 10.2 inches. The X5 has gotten rid of its traditional analog setup in favor of a 12.3-inch instrument cluster that is fully digital. The wide central dash comes arranged in a horizontal shape. The front seats stand out for their remarkable comfort.
