Jeep has made only minor changes to the Renegade for this year, as far as we know. They are keeping those changes very close to the vest, for now, letting the suspense build and the rumor mill churn. Test mule sightings are increasing, though, giving us a little more to go on than mere speculation and guesswork. The exterior appears to have a slight update, and it seems Jeep is utilizing the interior from a different model. Here are the answers to questions you may have on the Renegade.
What changes have been made to the Jeep Renegade?
Nothing official has been announced by Jeep, although there have been some test mule sightings and tidbits of information have been leaked. Based on the sightings, the exterior has been changed only slightly. The front fascia appears to have undergone subtle changes, and the fog lights have been enlarged and relocated a little closer to the center. There also appears to be new vents located directly below the turn signal lights. The headlights on the new Renegade appear to have been changed. They seem to be halogen or LED headlamps with a daytime running halo, similar to the 2019 Wrangler's headlights. Changes to the interior are believed to be a bit more extensive. It seems the central control stack and dashboard in the new Renegade will be very similar to those in the 2019 Cherokee.
Will there be a new Renegade trim level?
Nothing has been announced about any changes to the trim lineup. At this time, it appears the trim options will remain the same. The Renegade is currently available in Sport, Latitude, Trailhawk and Limited trims. Jeep just might offer a couple Special Edition trims, though, like the Altitude and Upland.
Is there going to be a hybrid Renegade model?
That is a possibility. The most up-to-date word on the street is that there very well might be a hybrid option for this year. Rumor has it Jeep is working on equipping the new Renegade with the same 2.4-L four-cylinder engine that's in the 2018 model but enhancing it with their eTorque system to produce a mild hybrid set-up. Considering the Renegade's poor fuel efficiency, a hybrid option is very likely. A slightly more exciting rumor is that the 2019 Renegade will be available with the four-cylinder turbocharged engine that's going into the new Cherokee. If this is the case, it will likely make 225 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque. This same rumor also suggests the new Renegade engine option will be mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission. More than likely, if this is true, this combination will be available in the Trailhawk and Limited trims. If these two possibilities don't come to pass, or even if they do, the 2019 Renegade Sport and Latitude will probably come standard with the same engine as the 2018 models. The 2018 models come with a 1.4-L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 160 hp and 184 lb-ft. of torque. It comes paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. The standard engine in the Limited and Trailhawk trims is currently a 2.4-L four-cylinder engine that makes 180 hp and 175 lb-ft. of torque.
Will there be a big price increase for the Renegade?
Prices will probably go up by right around $500. If so, the price range for a Renegade will be around $20,500 to $28,500.
Does the Jeep Renegade get good gas mileage?
No, and, unless Jeep produces that rumored hybrid model, the 2019 Renegade won't be any more fuel efficient than the 2018 model. The 2018 Jeep Renegade gets 21 to 24 mpg in the city and 29 to 31 mpg on the highway. Those are not good numbers for a subcompact crossover SUV.
Will the new Renegade have more cargo room?
Probably not, considering the basic dimensions of the Renegade don't appear to have changed. The old Renegade has a total of 50.8 cubic feet of space, though, which is actually quite roomy for a subcompact CUV. It's on par with the competition. The Renegade also comes with a 60/40 or 40/20/40-split rear seat, depending on the trim.
Is Jeep going to make any big changes to the Renegade's infotainment system?
If so, they're keeping those changes well guarded. There has been no word on any changes. The old Renegade comes with a standard six-speaker audio system. It is equipped with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capabilities, Integrated Voice Command with Bluetooth and a Media Hub with a USB port and Auxiliary jack. SiriusXM Satellite Radio with a one-year subscription comes standard on all but the base trim. The base trim comes with a 5-inch display and Uconnect 3. All other trims come with a 7-inch display and Uconnect 4.
Will there be any new active-assist safety features on the Renegade?
Jeep hasn't announced any new safety features for the Renegade. Upper trim levels for the 2019 Renegade come with a good selection of active-assist safety systems like active lane keep assist, rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitoring and forward collision warning. The only special safety equipment on the base trim is a rearview camera.
Are there compact SUV's that would be a better buy than the new Renegade?
Possibly, although that's difficult to say at this point. Based on the current Renegade, though, you might prefer a Mazda CX-3. It gets better mileage and costs about the same, but the Renegade is better for off-roading.
