Comparing Top Truck Brands

Comparing Top Truck Brands

June 2, 2017

Determining which truck brand is best is not really as easy as you might think. If you are in the market for a new truck and trying to decide which brand to go with, you might actually have a really tough time. Your final decision is going to depend on which features are most important for you. Here are the answers to the most common questions. Hopefully, they will help you decide which is best when comparing top truck brands.

Who makes the least expensive truck?

Dodge actually makes the least expensive truck. Base prices for the 2017 Dodge Ram 1500 range from $26,495 to $53,575. Ford comes in second with base prices for the 2017 F-150 ranging from $27,110 to $63,625. Chevrolet comes in at a very close third with prices for the 2017 Silverado 1500 starting at $27,785 to $55,275. GMC is in fourth place with prices for the 2017 Sierra ranging from $28,405 to $55,955. The 2017 Nissan Titan is $29,580 to $61,960 and the 2017 Toyota Tundra is $30,120 to $50,130.

Which truck brand produces the truck with the most horsepower?

Ford takes the number one spot for the truck with the most horsepower. The 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor 4-wheel-drive produces 450 hp @ 5000 RPM with 510 lb-ft. of torque at 3500 RPM. Chevrolet and GMC come in second in this category. The 2017 Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 with the 6.2-liter V8 produce 420 hp and 460 lb-ft. of torque. Dodge comes in third with the 2017 Ram 1500. It produces 395 hp when equipped with the V8 engine. Nissan takes fourth place with the 2017 Titan producing 390 hp. Toyota comes in last with the 2017 Tundra producing 381 hp.

Which brand equips their trucks with the latest infotainment technology?

All of the truck manufacturers have done a good job of keeping up with today’s infotainment technology. They each have their own slightly different twist on what they have to offer. Most offer Bluetooth connectivity, Wi-Fi, USB ports, power outlets and touchscreens. GMC, Ford, and Chevrolet all offer Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SYNC infotainment systems. In this category, though, Chevrolet wins it with their easier-to-use smartphone integration system. Dodge comes in second with their Uconnect system, and Ford comes in third. GMC is about the same as Ford. Nissan offers NissanConnect infotainment, which is good but not quite better than GMC. Toyota puts a good standard Entune infotainment system in the Tundra, but it simply isn’t as good as the others.

Which trucks are the safest?

The Ford F-150 comes in at first place in this category. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) gave it a Good rating, which is the best possible rating. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) also gave it the highest possible rating of five out of five stars. Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 come in at second place. The IIHS gave them both a Good rating in all tests except the Small overlap front, where they only got a Marginal rating. The NHTSA gave them both an overall safety rating of five stars. Nissan Titan got a Good rating from IIHS on four of the five crash tests and a Marginal on one. The NHTSA hasn’t rated it. The Dodge Ram 1500 and Toyota Tundra are in the last place in this category, with four-star ratings from NHTSA. They got a Good rating from the IIHS on a few of the crash tests. For the Small Front Overlap test and Roof Strength test, though, they only got Marginal or Acceptable ratings.

Which Truck brand is the most fuel efficient?

Most of them are very close on fuel efficiency, so this is likely to be a significant deciding factor. The 2017 Ford F-150 gets 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. The GMC Sierra 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 get almost the same mileage with 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. The Dodge Ram 1500 is also about the same with 17 mpg in the city and 25 on the highway. The Nissan Titan isn’t quite as efficient with 15 mpg in the city and 21 on the highway. The Toyota Tundra gets the worst mileage with 13 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway. Keep in mind that these numbers will vary, depending on the model. For example, if you go with the Ford F-150 Raptor, the mileage drops to 15/18.

What trucks have the most up-to-date technology?

Ford wins this category with Driver-assist Technology in the F-150. Pro Trailer Backup Assist, a Blind Spot Information System, a Lane-Keeping System, the Curve Control/AdvanceTrac/RSC and Active park assist are a handful of the high-tech goodies included. Chevrolet comes in at a close second with a long list of great options that come standard or are available in the Silverado. GMC also has some nice technology available with the Enhanced Driver Alert package, but it’s just not quite as good. Toyota equips the 2017 Tundra with some nice technology, like the standard rearview camera and push-button start. You can get other features like blind spot monitoring as well as front and rear parking sensors, but you have to pay extra. Nissan Titan has park assist, rearview camera, 360-degree surround-view camera, front/rear parking sensors, ear cross traffic alert and blind spot monitoring as available add-on options. Dodge comes in last in this category because they don’t offer any driver-assist systems standard in the Ram 1500. You can get front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera and rear park assist added on, though.
