Fortunately, prices have not gone up considerably. One automaker made enough improvements to one of its CUVs to bring it up to the top spot. Several manufacturers are introducing brand new 2018 CUV models that are intriguing. They are tough little compact CUV's that promise to be fun to drive and easy on the wallet.


What are the top budget-friendly 2018 crossover SUVs?

In 2017, the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5 and Ford Escape were the top three CUVs. It appears that at least the CR-V and CX-5 will be in the same position for 2018. All three are designed to carry five people, including the driver.<br><br>The Honda CR-V won Car and Driver's 10 Best and Editor's Choice Awards in 2017. The 2018 CR-V is available in four different trim levels with your choice of either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The LX is the base trim. The EX, EX-L and Touring trim levels come with a 1.5-L turbocharged I-4 engine. The FWD models get 28/34 mpg while the AWD models get 27/33 mpg. They all have 75.8 cubic feet of cargo space. MSRP base price ranges from $24,985 to $34,735.<br><br>The Mazda CX-5 won Car and Driver's Editor's Choice award in 2017. Mazda won't begin production of the CX-5 until November. Prices and specs haven't been released, but there aren't any big changes expected for 2018. Official mileage figures have not been released; however, the Ford Focus gets 25 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway with the 2.0-L Ti-VCT and 30/40 mpg with the 1.0-L EcoBoost engine. The EcoSport should get similar mileage. <br><br>Hyundai has a brand new 2018 crossover SUV in the works. The 2018 Kona is a small, subcompact CUV that will be available with your choice of a 1.0-L turbocharged 3-cylinder engine, 1.6-L turbo GDI engine, 2.0-L Atkinson engine, a 1.6-L diesel engine or an all-electric motor with a range of over 240 miles on a fully-charged battery. This subcompact CUV comes in two trim levels with your choice of three engines. The price for this new CUV in the UK is 16,295 to ??20,495, which converts to $21,506 to $27,049.
