BMW is ushering in the new year with plenty of changes in their line-up. From minor changes to some of their best sellers to entirely new models and trim additions. BMW have been very busy getting ready for 2018. Continuing efforts to offer eco-friendly vehicles have resulted in an expanded "e" menu and a brand new little compact X. Here are the answers to some of the questions you might have if you're in the market for a brand new, high-end sedan or SUV.
Which is BMW's top-selling Sedan?
BMW's 3 Series/4 Series are their top-selling sedans. They sold 99,083 of them in 2017. Of that number, 39,634 were 4 Series models, and 59,449 were 3 Series models. The 3 Series and 4 Series are small sedans that have been very lucrative for BMW. 3 Series sedans are available in your choice of Sport, Luxury, Shadow Sport or the high-performance M Sport body styles. 4 Series sedans come in Coupe, Gran Coupe, and Convertible body styles. Prices on the 2018 3 Series sedans range from $34,900 to $50,950. Base MSRP for the 2018 4 Series models are $43,500 to $51,900.
The BMW 5 Series mid-size sedan slots right in between the 3 and 4 Series with 40,658 of them sold in 2017. The lower trim levels, the 530i, 530i xDrive, 530e iPerformance and 530e xDrive iPerformance come with a 2-L TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engine. The 540i and 540i xDrive come equipped with a six-cylinder, TwinPower Turbo 3-L engine. The M550i xDrive comes with BMW's 4.4-L, V-8, TwinPower Turbo M Performance engine. Is the BMW 3 Series or 4 Series sedans available with a hybrid motor?
The sporty 3 Series 330e has a 2-L 4-cylinder gas-powered engine and a lithium-ion battery-powered electric motor. It gets a combined 71 mpge.
The 3 Series is also available equipped with one of three gas-only engines or a diesel engine. There are two available transmissions. An eight-speed STEPTRONIC Sport automatic transmission with paddle shifters comes standard. A six-speed manual transmission is an available option for those who prefer to do the shifting themselves.
The 4 Series sedans aren't available with a hybrid motor; however, the gas-powered engines they do come equipped with are fuel efficient. Base 4 Series 430i sedans get 24 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway with their turbocharged four-cylinder engines. Sedans equipped with the six-cylinder engine get 21 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway.
The 5 Series 530e models are also hybrids. They come with an eDrive 111-hp electric motor along with the gas-powered engine.
Were any big changes made to the 3 Series and 4 Series sedans for 2018?
The 3 Series and 4 Series sedans only got minor trim changes for 2018. BMW updated the suspension in the 4 Series models and upgraded the infotainment system in both.
