Kia manufactures an impressive variety of sedans, crossovers, SUVs, and hatchbacks. All of them are available with affordable price tags and a respectable list of infotainment and safety features. One vehicle in Kia's lineup is actually the top-selling model in its class. If you're in the market for an affordable new fuel-efficient vehicle, don't make the mistake of overlooking what Kia has to offer. Here are the answers to some questions you might have about 2018 Kias.
Is the Kia Forte a sedan or hatchback?
It is technically both. The Forte is a sedan. The Forte5 is the hatchback version. The Kia Forte/Forte5 is the top-selling 2018 Kia with 44,191 sold as of May 31. This is a good, affordable five-passenger sedan/hatchback. MSRP ranges from $16,800 to $21,700 for the sedan and $18,300 to $23,900 for the hatchback. The Forte is easy on the wallet at the gas pump, too. The Forte LX and S trim are equipped with the 147-hp 2.0-L DOHC I4 engine, and 6-speed automatic transmission get 29 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway. The EX trim has a 164-hp version of the same engine under the hood which gets 25 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. The Forte5 LX and EX get 25 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. The Forte5 SX gets 25 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. Several close competitors get slightly better mileage, though. The Honda Civic sedan, Hyundai Elantra Eco and Chevrolet Cruze sedan all get a few miles per gallon more. The infotainment system in the Forte/Forte5 is fairly good for an inexpensive sedan. The base system has Bluetooth connectivity, one USB port and a SiriusXM/AM/FM/CD/MP3 equipped four-speaker stereo. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a navigation system and six-speaker stereo, are available.
Is the Kia Soul a hatchback or SUV?
The Soul is an unusual-looking five-passenger compact CUV that is instantly recognizable on the road. It's fun to drive and very useful with a total of 61.3 cubic feet of available cargo space. The Soul is actually the top-selling compact car this year. It has earned Car and Driver's 10Best and Editor's Choice awards. Kia has sold 40,165 of them as of May 31. The base model comes with a 130-hp 1.6-L DOHC I4 and either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. It gets 24 to 25 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. The + trim comes with a 160- or 161-hp 2.0-L I4 with a 6-speed automatic transmission and gets the same mileage as the Base trim. The ! trim comes with a 201-hp 1.6-L I4 turbocharged engine under the hood and a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. It gets 26 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. Starting MSRP ranges from $16,200 to $22,900. The Soul comes with the same infotainment system and available options as the Forte.
Is the Kia Optima a decent sedan for commuting back and forth to work?
The Optima is a great commuter car and one of Kia's best-selling models with 38,253 sold so far this year. This is an affordable, roomy five-passenger sedan that is also fuel efficient. It gets 22 to 28 mpg in the city and 31 to 37 mpg on the highway. The most fuel-efficient of the five available trims is the LX 1.6T. It's the mid-level trim and has a price tag of $24,400. The least expensive is the LX trim at $22,600, and the most expensive is the SX at $30,600.There are three available engines for the Optima and two transmissions. UVO with a 7-inch touchscreen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth connectivity and a six-speaker stereo system are standard. Optimas come with a good set of safety systems, too, including Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Lane Change Assist, Rear Parking Assist and Rear Camera Display. The Optima is a good car, but there are a few others that are better. If you're shopping, add the Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata and Toyota Camry to your test-drive list.
Does Kia offer a good mid-size SUV?
The Sorento is a good mid-size SUV and Kia's other best-selling model. As of May 31, Kia has sold 40,671 of them. The Sorento is a five- or seven-passenger, FWD or AWD SUV with a spacious, almost luxurious interior. There are three engine options for the Sorento, including a powerful V6. This SUV gets pretty good mileage, too, with 17 to 21 mpg in the city and 23 to 28 mpg on the highway. Its infotainment system is similar to the Optima. Standard safety features are limited to the rearview camera; however, a long list of active assist options are available. There are five Sorento trims with MSRP's ranging from $25,900 to $46,300.
