Volvo XC60 Review

Volvo has made some big changes to the XC60, including a new look and different dimensions. It may not be the right CUV for everybody, but most new owners will be happy with it. The XC60 is a nicely equipped, roomy CUV that is actually reasonably priced for what you get. Find the answers to your questions about this newly-upgraded CUV.

1

How many passengers can fit in the XC60?

The Volvo XC60 is a five-passenger SUV.

2

Did Volvo make any changes to the XC60?

Yes. The XC60 is entering its second generation this year with a new, more athletic look and a new size. Volvo enlarged the mid-sized CUV slightly, giving it a 3.6-inch-longer wheelbase and 2.4-inch-longer overall size. It is also .5-inch wider and .5-inch lower to the ground. A new hybrid option is also available this year.

The XC60 comes with different suspension mode options that can be used to adjust the suspension by as much as 1.6 inches. The four selections are Comfort, Eco, Off-Road and Sport modes.

The interior has been upgraded, too. Higher trims come with natural driftwood trim in silver-gray that retains the wood texture underneath a clear coating.

3

Is the XC60 roomy enough for a larger person to drive comfortably?

Yes, the XC60 is very accommodating for larger and smaller people. The seats are incredibly comfortable and provide excellent back support with the standard Power Lumbar Support system. A Power Driver Seat Adjustment with Memory and Power Front Passenger Seat Adjustment are standard in all XC60's. The seat and door mirrors can be adjusted to any angle to make your driving experience comfortable. The front passenger seat back and bottom cushion adjust to any setting you like, too.

The Memory system lets you store up to three different driver positions to make it easy to switch settings when multiple drivers are using the same vehicle. You can adjust the settings from a 6' 3" 300-lb driver to a 5' 8" 185-lb driver to a 5' 4" 135-lb driver, for example, by simply pushing a button.

4

How much cargo space is there in the new XC60?

The XC60 has 29.7 cubic feet of area behind the rear seat when it is in its fully upright position. This is an average amount of cargo space for a mid-sized CUV. It has a total of 63.3 cubic feet of cargo space with the back seats folded flat, which is more space than most mid-size CUV's have to offer.

5

What are the different trim levels for the XC60?

There are three different rim levels available with the XC60. They are the Inscription, Momentum and R Design.

6

Are there multiple engine options for the XC60?

There are three different engine options for the XC60. They are the T5 or T6 gas-powered engines and a T8 plug-in hybrid. The T5 is a 250-hp 2-L turbocharged engine. The T6 is a 316-hp 2-L turbocharged/supercharged engine. The T8 plug-in hybrids come with the T6 engine paired with an electric motor.

7

Is the XC60 expensive?

The new XC60 is about $2,000 more than similar CUV's, but it is worth it for what you get. The lowest trim level with the least expensive engine option, which is the T5 AWD Momentum, costs $41,500. An XC60 AWD Momentum model with the T6 engine starts at $44,900. The XC60 T8 eAWD Momentum starts at $52,900.

8

Does the XC60 have a good infotainment system?

The infotainment system in the XC60 is almost entirely controlled through a 9" display screen. It is very responsive and has nice, crisp graphics. It does have a variety of menus that take some getting used to. The Sensus Connect system is easy to use, though. Bluetooth and iPod or iPhone connectivity come standard on all trims, as well as a jack and USB port. Gracenote, Pandora, Stitcher, and TuneIn are standard internet radio apps. The radio is an AM/FM/HD radio along with SiriusXM radio.

9

Does the XC60 come in front-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive?

The XC60 is an all-wheel-drive CUV. That is the only option.

10

How fuel efficient is the new XC60?

The XC60 with a T5 or T6 gas-powered engine gets 21-22 mpg in the city and 27-28 mpg on the highway. If you opt for the T8 eAWD hybrid, you can expect to get 26-60 mpg in the city and 28-58 mpg on the highway.

11

What sort of safety features does the XC60 come with?

The XC60 is one of the safest CUV's on the market. It has more standard safety systems and available safety systems than Audi, Lexus or Mercedes-Benz CUV's. All trim levels come with Collision Mitigation with Active Braking, Automatic Braking after Collision, Run-off-Road Mitigation and Protection, Oncoming Lane Mitigation, Lane Keep Assist and Traffic Sign Recognition systems. They also come with a Driver Drowsiness Monitor, a Rearview Camera and Active High-beam Headlights.

Additional safety systems that are available in the XC60 include Rear Collision Warning with Braking, Blind Spot Monitoring with Steering Assist, Semiautonomous Drive, Distance Alert, Cross Traffic Alert, a 360-degree camera, Distance Alert and Adaptive Cruise Control.

12

Are there similar SUV's available that might be a better deal?

Finding a better-equipped mid-sized CUV for the money would be difficult. The XC60 is worth every dollar. If you are looking for a CUV that handles differently, though, there are a couple of other options to look at.

You might like a Audi Q5 more than the XC60 if you prefer a CUV that offers quicker acceleration and sharper handling. It costs about the same as the XC60 and gets about the same gas mileage. It has about three cubic feet less cargo space with the back seat up or down, though.

The BMW X3 is also a bit more fun to drive. It offers a more athletic suspension and precision steering that make navigating tight curves a breeze. The X3 is also a very safe CUV. The base MSRP for the lowest trim level is a little more than the XC60 but certainly in the same ballpark. Mileage figures are about the same. It has only slightly less cargo space.
