The 2019 Bentley Bentayga

Bentley is one of the many manufacturers that have been adding SUVs into their lineups. This automaker is among the oldest and most popular manufacturers of luxury automobiles. The company decided to offer an SUV to cope with the high demand for SUVs. In case you didn’t know, SUVs are selling faster than hot queen cakes. The 2019 Bentley Bentayga has a V8 model which continues where the first Bentayga left off when it a more than a year ago. The V8 has replaced the original opulent W12 engine. The Bentayga V8 is meant for the people; it offers more fuel efficiency when compared to the Flying Spur and Mulsanne sedans that are powered by a W12. The V8 is also the cheapest when compared to other Bentleys. The new Bentayga offers over-the-top luxury and outrageous power. It is a luxury off-roader that sets standards.

Which safety features are on offer?

This vehicle offers numerous passive and high-tech active safety features. However, most of these features are not standard. You have to get the Touring Specification to enjoy features like night vision, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and head-up display. Likewise, it is only the City Specification package that offers a top-view camera, rear-cross-traffic alert, traffic sign recognition tech, Park Assist that also warns pedestrians and other features. Automakers like Honda and Toyota have standardized majority of these features. Of course, you can get them in your Bentayga for an extra price. Generally, it gets high marks for its safety features. We give it an 8 out of 10.

Where does the power come from?

The new Bentayga has been offered with several powertrain options. A plug-in hybrid, a diesel engine, the new V8 and the original W12 engine. Currently, it is only the V8 and W12 engines that offered in the United States. The plug-in should be available by the end of the year, but the diesel option was scraped off after the “Dieselgate” emissions scandal. The twin-turbo W12 has a capacity of 6 liters, and it produces 664 lb-ft and 600 bhp. On the other hand, the twin-turbo V8 has a capacity of 4 liters and it produces 568 pound-feet of torque and 542 brake horsepower. So what is the difference? For the W12, it is a 0-60 time of 4.0 seconds while for the V8, it is 4.4 seconds. The engines can hit top speeds of 187 and 180 mph respectively. This means that the engines performance is almost similar.

What does the exterior look like?

In 2012, Bentley introduced the EXP 9F; their first concept SUV. It was a big flop! It performed worse than Hillary did in the 2016 presidential elections. Many people didn’t like its controversial look. The company came back with a more conservative Bentayga in 2016. The Bentayga is a good looking SUV that has Bentley’s design. This vehicle offers many choices of trim materials, color combinations, wheel designs, and finishes. The SUV you chose can be sporty, sinister, stately and so on.

What do we think about its pricing?

Ultra-luxury vehicles like this one are not easy to judge. Its base price is $165,000. When compared to its 12-cylinder sibling, this price is $64,000 cheaper. This makes it the most affordable Bentley. The irony is that this base is still too much for many people because it is more than most people make annually. When compared to other costly luxury SUVs like Rolls-Royce Cullinan, Lamborghini Urus and Mercedes-Benz G-Class, Bentley’s pricing is pretty fair because it is somewhere in the middle. The starting price is lower than the Cullinan’s $300K and higher than the G-Class. Meanwhile, the Urus starts at approximately $200K. Ultimately, you will have to spend more money to acquire Bentley’s options.

What do we think about its handling?

It has a super-fast 48-volt system. This is thanks to the V8’s air suspension with active roll control and Bentley Dynamic Ride. The result is a balanced handling and ride that can be controlled to suit your needs, from firm and sharp to soft yet stable. This vehicle weighs 5,280-pounds and therefore it is incredible that it is handled by air and electronics. It will be interesting to see how the much stronger Lamborghini Urus will fair with this technology. The V8 model can tow up to 7,716 pounds.

Who is it made for?

If wishes were horses, then beggars would ride. The 2019 Bentley Bentayga should be any petrolhead’s desire if money is no object. This luxury-crossover SUV can deal with the toughest off-road terrains. It boasts of being the fastest production SUV.

What is our verdict about the new Bentley Bentayga?

We love the new Bentley Bentayga’s athleticism that comes from its robust V8 engine. The on-road verve does not come at the expense of refinement and luxury. It offers everything that has made the Bentley a popular car. It's the Bentayga to own.
