The 740e xDrive iPerformance is BMW's 7-series luxury hybrid. It didn't get any significant changes for 2018 because it doesn't really need any. A roomy, well-appointed interior, smooth ride, exceptional handling and fuel efficiency make the 740e one of the best super luxury hybrid sedans available. The minor changes BMW made didn't really improve anything. Fortunately, the changes are only available options, so you don't have to get them. Here are the answers to questions you may have about the 2018 BMW 740e xDrive iPerformance.
What changes did BMW make to the 2018 740e?
The only changes for 2018 are optional active assist safety features. The $1,700 Driving Assistance Package includes Active Blind Spot Detection, a head-up display, and Lane Departure Warning. The Driving Assistance Plus Package, which also costs $1,700, includes Active Lane Keeping Assist with Side Collision Avoidance, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Front Cross-traffic Alert and Traffic Jam Assist and Evasion Aid. Semi-autonomous driving technology is still new, and some systems still have a few kinks that need to be worked out. Unfortunately, this is true of BMW's Lane Departure Warning and Active Lane Keeping Assist with Side Collision Avoidance systems. It works, technically, but it is slow to kick in and, under certain conditions, the car seems to be over-correcting because it was slow to respond in the first place. It can be rather unnerving, to say the least.
Is the 2018 BMW 740e sedan fuel efficient?
Yes, it is. The 740e xDrive iPerformance sedan gets a combined 64 mpge when you use both the gas engine and electric motor. On gas alone, it gets a combined 27 mpg. BMW's non-electric counterpart, the 740i xDrive, only gets a combined 24 mpg. The 740e can only go about 14 miles with the electric motor before it needs to be charged, though. If you only live 10 miles from work and can charge it at work, you will save even more money on fuel.
Does the 740e have more than one available engine option?
No. The 740e comes with a 255-hp 2.0-L TwinPower Turbo Inline 4-cylinder gas engine and 111-hp electric motor. Combined horsepower is limited to 322 with a maximum of 369 lb-ft. of torque. That's plenty of power to take this large sedan from 0 to 60 in 5.1 seconds. The transmission is an 8-speed Steptronic automatic that has both Manual and Sport shift modes. It also has paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel and Adaptive Transmission Control.
What different trims are available for the 2018 BMW 740e xDrive?
There is only one trim level for the 2018 740e xDrive iPerformance.
How much does a new 2018 BMW 740e hybrid cost?
Starting MSRP for the 740e is $90,700. That's for a basic model. Additional options add up quickly, too. For example, if you opt for the Zagora Beige Nappa Leather upholstery, it will cost you an additional $1,500 for the leather plus $3,300 for the required Executive Package with Multi-contour seats.
Does the BMW 740e come with a hi-tech infotainment system?
The standard infotainment/audio system includes a Harman Kardon Surround Sound Audio System with 16 speakers. It also comes with an anti-theft AM/FM radio and CD/MP3 player with Radio Data System, HD Radio with multicast FM station reception and SiriusXM Satellite Radio with a one-year subscription. Enhanced USB and Bluetooth are also standard as well as a Navigation system with a 10.2-inch screen, a voice command system and gesture control with a 12.3-inch Dynamic Digital Instrument Cluster. The 740e also comes with a WiFi Hotspot with a free 3 GB three-month trial subscription and Qi wireless charging. Two USB ports with 2.1-amp charging are also standard. Apple CarPlay connectivity can be added for $300. A back-seat entertainment system is available for another $2,700. A bump up to the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System will cost an additional $3,400.
What standard safety systems does the 2018 740e xDrive iPerformance come with?
Standard safety systems include the Active Protection System. This system detects when an accident is imminent then automatically tightens the safety belts, closes the windows and moonroof and activates post-crash braking. The 740e also comes with a rear-view camera.
Is the BMW 740e xDrive iPerformance a five-passenger sedan?

There are upper tether anchors and lower anchors along with plenty of room for two car seats in the back, too.
Is the BMW 740e a rear-wheel-drive sedan?
