The Mercedes C-Class 2017 Lineup

Mercedes-Benz continues to crank out high performance and luxury in its C-Class models. The 2017 lineup is impressively varied with lots of models and options from which to choose. From the high-powered AMG's to the more sensible C300's and the C350e hybrid, they've got a C-Class for you. Unfortunately, one model they promised has not yet appeared. We'll keep watching for it, though.

1

Have the Mercedes C-Class sedans won any awards?

U.S. News & World Report gave the C-Class 8.7 out of 10, put it in 4th place among other luxury small cars and gave it the Best Cars for the Money, Best Cars for Families and Best Vehicle Brands awards. Motor Trend gave the C-Class 4 out of 5 stars. They didn't like the ride quality on rough roads and thought that the stop-start feature could be intrusive. The NHTSA gave it 5 out of 5 stars and the IIHS gave the C-Class a 2017 Top Safety Pick.

2

What trim package options are there?

There are a couple of trim packages for the C300's. The luxury trim package includes a standup Mercedes-Benz hood star, comfort-tuned suspension, 17-inch multispoke wheels and topstitched MB-Tex upper dash trim. The Sport Package includes the sportier AMG body styling with 18-inch AMG 5-spoke wheels, sport suspension, sport brake system, topstitched MB-Tex upper dash trim, sport interior with sport front seats, sport steering wheel, and brushed aluminum pedals.

The other models have some nice available add-on options like a panorama roof for $1,480, an AMG carbon fiber rear spoiler for $700 and a Night Package that includes glossy jet-black accents on the lower cross strut in the front, the rear valance and the tailpipes for $200.

3

Are the Mercedes C-Class sedans expensive?

They are actually fairly reasonably priced, for luxury sedans made by Mercedes-Benz. Base prices range from about $40,000 to just over $80,000. The C300's are the least expensive. The most expensive model is the AMG C63 S cabriolet. Keep in mind that these are base prices. If you go with the C300 sedan with the sport package, for example, the price jumps from just under $40,000 up to $42,600. The C350e Hybrid is about $47,000 for the basic model, but it comes with a $4,043 Federal Tax Incentive.

4

Does the C350e Plug-in Hybrid have any power?

Yes, it is actually more powerful than the C300 and C300 4MATIC sedans. It has the same gas engine but it has 275 hp (combined) with 443 lb-ft torque (combined). It goes from 0 to 60 in 5.8 seconds, which is 2 seconds faster than the C300's.

5

Isn't there a C-Class diesel?

There is supposed to be a 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class diesel, the C300d. Unfortunately, it is not yet available and there is no word on when it will be.

6

Do the C-Class vehicles get good gas mileage?

The C300 gets 24 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. The 4MATIC gets the same in the city but only 31 mpg on the highway. The coupes and cabriolets get 23 mpg in the city and 30-31 mpg on the highway. The AMG's aren't quite as efficient, as you would expect from a high-performance sedan. The C43's get 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. The C63 and C63 S sedans, coupes and cabriolets only get 17-18 mpg in the city and 22-24 mpg on the highway. If you want a really eco-friendly C-Class sedan, go with the C350e Plug-in Hybrid. It gets 45 mpg in the city and 61 mpg on the highway.

7

Which of the Mercedes C-Class models is more sporty?

The AMG's are the sporty C-Class cabriolets, coupes, and sedans. They are built for high performance. The C43 is the least sporty. It has the AMG-enhanced 3.0L V6 biturbo, which provides 362 hp with 384 lb-ft torque. If you want more power, the C63 and C63 S have got you covered. They have the handcrafted AMG 4.0L V8 biturbo under the hood. The C63 has 469 hp with 479 lb-ft torque and the C63 S has 503 hp with 516 lb-ft torque.

8

What are the differences in the various models?

The coupes are, of course, smaller than the sedans, but they have the same engines. The cabriolets are a bit more sporty and available with a convertible top. A comfort-tuned suspension and dual high-resolution screens come standard in the C300 4MATIC. You can get the comfort-tuned suspension on the basic C300 as an optional add-on, but not the dual high-res screens. They have the same engine, though. The C350e Plug-in Hybrid has the same gas-powered engine as the C300's along with an electric motor. The AMG C43, C63, and C63 S each have slightly more powerful gas engines.
