2019 Jaguar I-Pace


The 2019 Jaguar I-Pace EV, an electric vehicle which only operates from periodic visits to the charging station, is getting serious points for both technology and style. On the tech side, the design produces quiet, responsive electric motor power from graceful acceleration to serious butt-kicking up to 124 mph, and does it so quietly that simulated drivetrain sounds are available through the audio system. Style is simply Jaguar, and with a few lessons learned from the F-Pace materials downgrades, there are plenty of ways to admire the I-Pace. While creating a dazzling blend of angles and curves that is the I-Pace body, some reviewers have said that it became a bit less practical for actual use, such as cargo space. Nonetheless, first customer Prince Charles seems to think his is practical enough.

What are the power and performance numbers? What kind of drivetrain does the 2019 Jaguar I-Pace offer?

The I-Pace uses two 147-kW, 197-hp AC motors. There's one per axle, and together they bring the crossover to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. As an EV, features such as regeneration can be configured to behave in ways familiar to most traditional drivers (creeps forward at idle), or to EV-aware pilots (stands still until commanded).

What caught the Prince's eye in the I-Pace design? Test drivers are reporting heads turning and waving from bystanders, too.

Ask Jaguar design head Ian Callum, who took the design of the I-Pace's exterior in another direction from competitors and even from Jaguar's own F-Pace and E-Pace. There's speculation that we may see similar work throughout the company's production in the future. The cab-forward design, more like a stretched hatchback, works well with batteries below and motors tucked neatly at each end. This design also provided plenty of interior space without turning the I-Pace into a crossover bubble shape.

What is the interior like? Are there any notable divergences from the other Jaguar lines?

Overall, the I-Pace's interior is comfortable with plenty of leg room thanks to the overall stretched hatchback design. It's quiet, and the front seats have quite a few adjustments as well as heating and cooling options. Overall, much less divergent from other Jaguar models than the external appearance.

What exterior colors are available?

Unless you are Prince Charles, in which case the Jaguar color Loire Blue is available for I-Pace use, there are twelve available exterior colors for the three trim levels and one additional color, Proton Red, available only at the First Edition level. Caesium Blue covers the non-royal buyer's choice of blue, Firenze Red or Proton Red (as noted) and Polaris White are available along with Rhodium Silver Metallic, Silicon Silver Premium Metallic. Borasco Gray Metallic, Corris Gray, Cosmic Black and Glacier White Metallic, Ultimate Black Metallic and Narvik Black round out the currently available color choices.

How are the infotainment and tech capabilities for the I-Pace?

The 2019 Jaguar I-Pace provides two displays to allow easier configuration and monitoring, one a full 10.0 inches and the other 5.5 inches. Artificial Intelligence capability helps manage individual driver preferences. Navigation Pro GPS is available along with Alexa Voice Assistant, which allows drivers to check system parameters using the Jaguar Alexa Skill. InControl Touch Pro Duo provides full-featured audio source control in addition to driver information and comfort management.

Is the I-Pace really being used as a race car?

The I-Pace will be featured in the Jaguar I-PACE eTrophy racing series, the first all-electric racing championship.

Does the I-Pace have off-road potential?

Clearly, there has been some cross-pollination from Land Rover. The I-Pace has agile all-wheel drive plus adaptive modes for handling tough terrain with ease, like cruise control for mountain paths. It can ford streams up to nearly 20 inches as easily as it fires up at the race track.

What is the I-Pace cargo space and interior room like?

Behind the second row of seats is an especially roomy 25.3 cu ft of cargo space which increases to 51 when the rear seats are down. The front hood covers a bit more space. The rear liftgate is manually opened for entry-level customers, but higher trim levels offer power and hands-free modes. Inside, a simple and elegant interior awaits which exploits the increased space available forward of the driver to provide legroom all around. The new infotainment system, two touch panels, AI-influenced comfort features and an activity key system which uses a proximity-based wristband in place of a standard key are a few of the interior tech enhancements which Jaguar has included, along with a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control (four-zone optional) and a generous collection of audio sources and device power sources, plus Wi-Fi.

How does the I-Pace compare, as an EV, to the Tesla Model X?

Both have a range of over 200 miles, and both can use both standard and fast charging stations. Reports say that Prince Charles now has a fast charging station installed at his home to support his new I-Pace purchase. Acceleration is impressive in both, but the I-Pace is a Jaguar and has the advantage of Jaguar design which makes all the difference in appearance and passenger experience.
