The 2019 Buick Regal uses an old name, but in real sense, it is a brand new idea. It is like a person who has just undergone facial plastic surgery. General Motors has offered it as a wagon or fastback. Although it requires a little more polish, we think that it's certainly sharp. This vehicle belongs to the sixth generation; it is currently in the second model year. GM Europe is responsible for assembling the Buick Regal models that will be eventually sold in North America. The operations happen in the GM-Opel Russelsheim plant. On the other hand, SAIC and GM China are responsible for the Chinese market.
Should we expect any changes?
This model has been presented with some changes for 2019. The first thing that you will notice is that there is a new top-of-the-line trim level: the Regal Avenir. The Regal GS and Sportback add an ionizing air cleaner, new Pearl Nickel-finished aluminum wheels (19 inches) and whisper Beige seats. The new Avenir offers 19-inch aluminum wheels, special upholstery, whisper Beige seats, and many other standard features. An ionizing air cleaner has been added to the 2019 TourX.
Which body styles are available?
In North America, this vehicle is available in two body styles. The first one is the Regal TourX, a midsize ruggedized wagon with four doors. The second one is the Regal Sportback; a midsize sedan that features a liftback hatch. In China, it is available as a sedan that has the looks of the Sportback.
What is under the hood of the 2019 Buick Regal?
This vehicle is based on GM’s E2 platform which is also used by Buick LaCrosse, Opel Insignia, Chevrolet Malibu, Cadillac XT4 and Holden Commodore NG. The standard engine of this vehicle is a 2.0-liter turbo-4. It offers lively acceleration, delivering 250 horsepower. On the other hand, a naturally aspirated 3.6L V6 engine is offered by the Regal Sportback GS, it delivers 310 horsepower. The Buick Regal is offered with both front wheel and all wheel drive. For a car of its type, the Sportback is pretty fast; it only needs about 6.2 seconds to hit a sprint of 0-60 mph. The transmission finds the right gear with ease, and the well-tuned powertrain delivers enough power. The steering setup assures the driver of maneuverability and confident handling. It also comes with a well-engineered chassis. Regal Sportbacks are offered with a four-link independent rear suspension and a MacPherson front suspension. We feel that the Sportback’s ride is just short of being sporty, but it is still fun and responsive.
What are the highs and lows of the Buick Regal?
We love that the Buick Regal has inspired wagon options, plenty of power, gorgeous European styling, maximized space and utility, and confident handling and road manners. However, we don’t like that it lacks important safety tech in the lower trims. It might be confusing for Americans who can’t figure out if it is a wagon or hatchback. In addition to this, we don’t like that it lacks a premium fit and finish at all levels.
How will it be presented in the market?
In North America, it will be available in the third quarter of this year. This timeline is in accordance with GM’s traditional model year. Buick Regal’s current sixth generation is set to continue until the 2023 model year arrives. In 2024, we expect to see the birth of the future Buick Regal.
How safe is this vehicle?
The 2019 Regal is yet to be rated by the NHTSA or the IIHS. This vehicle comes with numerous safety features like front knee airbags, front knee airbags, and dual-stage front airbags. All models are offered with a standard rearview camera. In case of a collision with a pedestrian, head injuries are limited by a pop-up hood. Unfortunately, only high trim levels offer active safety features. Some of the optional features include a Driver Confidence Package which offers rear parking sensors and blind-spot monitors. Active lane control, automatic emergency braking, forward collision warnings, and adaptive cruise control are optional features that are offered in the spend-up Driver Confidence Package.
