Subaru Levorg

The Subaru Levorg is very similar to the Impreza hatchback. Its dimensions are nearly identical, and it looks almost exactly like the Impreza hatch, both inside and out. There is one big difference, though, that really aggravates American Subaru fans, and that difference is measured in horses. The Levorg engines make more of them than the Impreza's. Many more. So, what's the big deal? The Levorg will not be sold in the United States. For those who are curious about this foreign Subaru anyway, here are the answers to your questions.


Is the Levorg available in multiple trims?

Yes, there are four trim levels available for the 2018 Levorg. The base trim is the 1.6 GT. Next in line is the 1.6 GT Premium followed by the 2.0 GT-S. The new trim for 2018 is the 2.0 STI Sport.


Is the 2018 Subaru Levorg expensive?

No, the new Levorg isn't any more expensive than other wagons in its class. The 1.6 GT's have a base price of $42,890 in Australia and $26,570 in Japan. The top trim, the 2.0STI Sport, has a starting MSRP of $51,990 in Australia. The same trim in Japan starts out at $38,840.


Can six people ride in the Subaru Levorg?

No, the Levorg is a five-passenger, mid-size station wagon, although it really does look like a slightly longer Impreza hatchback. The seating is comfortable and roomy. The back seat is better suited to two adults, two adults, and one child or three children, though than three adults. There's plenty of leg room, but it could be a bit wider. There is a full set of LATCH car-seat connectors, known in Australia as ISOFIX child seat mounts, in each of the outer seating positions in the back seat. The Levorg also comes standard with a cargo blind for the back seat.


How much room is there in the Levorg for cargo?

The Levorg has a total of about 51 cubic feet of cargo space with the back seat folded flat. With the back seat in place, there are 18.5 cubic feet of cargo space. The rear seat has a 60/40 split, too, which makes it much easier to haul longer items.

Subaru equips the Levorg with their EyeSight safety system. It is a very impressive suite of active-assist safety features. The EyeSight camera system includes cameras at the front, rear and sides. The base trim level comes with the EyeSight system with lane sway warning and AEB. The EyeSight systems in higher trims come with more advanced features like rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, brake light recognition, pre-collision steering assist, lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control.


Does the Levorg come with a bigger engine than the Impreza?

Yes, even the base trim comes with a more powerful engine than the Impreza. The standard Levorg engine is a 1.6-L four-cylinder turbocharged boxer that produces 170 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. Just for comparison, the Impreza has a 2.0-L four-cylinder boxer engine that makes only 152 hp and 145 lb-ft of torque. There is the only one engine option for the Impreza. The bigger engine option for the Levorg is a 300-hp, yes, that's right, 300 hp, 2.0-L turbocharged boxer that produces 295 lb-ft of torque. Why, Subaru, why can't we have all those horses, too? We'll probably never know why we just can't get them in America, at least not in a Subaru Levorg.Those two engines come paired with Subaru's Lineartronic CVT or Continuously Variable Transmission. The CVT is a very smooth-shifting system. In fact, it is so smooth it's difficult to determine when it's actually shifting. The Levorg does come equipped with paddle shifters on the wheel that allow you to shift between eight 'ratios,' if you feel the need to have control over the transmission. There is no manual transmission available, though.


Is the new Levorg a fuel-efficient wagon?

The 2018 Levorg gets between 22 and 31 mpg which is not great, but that's the cost of more horsepower. The Impreza 2.0i 5-door is EPA rated to get gets 37 mpg on the highway and 27 mpg in the city.


Does the Levorg infotainment system include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto?

No, it doesn't include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but it does have Bluetooth connectivity. It also includes five USB ports throughout the cabin and voice control as well as a 6.2-inch touch-screen.


What options are there that are like the Subaru Levorg?

The Subaru Impreza hatchback is probably the most similar vehicle that is available in America. The Impreza has slightly more cargo space and Subaru's STARLINK infotainment system. STARLINK includes a 6.5-inch touch-screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Pandora and Aha smart-phone app integration. It also includes Bluetooth streaming, a USB port with iPod control, a 3.5-mm auxiliary jack and hands-free phone connectivity. A 2018 Impreza 2.0i 5-door, the base model, has a starting MSRP of $18,995.The Honda Civic hatchback and Mazda's Mazda3 hatchback are also good options. They are both excellent hatchbacks that cost about the same as the Impreza hatch.
