The Impressive New Volvo V90

With the CUV segment taking over the roads, there aren't many stations wagons available. And even fewer luxury station wagons. The brand new 2018 Volvo V90 is the top luxury station wagon. It is a smooth-handling, handsome station wagon with clean lines and loads of high-end finishes throughout. If you dare to break away from the CUV crowd for a spacious, luxury wagon, you absolutely must take the V90 for a test drive. Here are the answers to some of the questions you may have on the new V90.

1

What is the top V90 trim and how much does it cost?

The top Volvo V90 is the T6 AWD Cross Country Volvo Ocean Race. The most difficult around-the-world yacht race was the inspiration behind this trim. It comes standard with a 316-hp 2-L Direct-injected Turbocharged & Supercharged Engine, the latest hi-tech safety features, a Premium Air Suspension in Rear and Active Chassis (Four-C), an eight-speed Geartronic automatic transmission and lots of special Ocean Race detailing. Base MSRP for this trim is $60,500.

2

How many trim levels are there for the new Volvo station wagon?

There are three Volvo V90 trim levels -- R-Design, Inscription, and Cross County. They are each available with either a T5 or T6 powertrain. The T5 option is a 250-hp, 2-L four-cylinder turbocharged engine, and front-wheel drive. The T6 option is a 316-hp, 2-L four-cylinder turbocharged and supercharged engine with all-wheel drive.

3

Is the Volvo V90 very expensive?

Starting MSRP for the new V90 ranges from $49,950 for the base T5 R-Design trim to $56,100 for the T6 AWD Cross Country.

4

How many passengers can fit in the new Volvo station wagon?

There is plenty of room for five people in the V90. The back seat is spacious, too, with plenty of room for tall adults to sit comfortably. Leather upholstery is standard on all trims, but you can upgrade to premium Nappa leather heated front seats and back seats, massaging front seats and ventilated front seats. Two LATCH anchors for child seats are located in the outermost second row of seats, and there is a top-tether anchor located in the center seat.

5

Is the new Volvo station wagon fuel efficient?

The new V90 gets average gas mileage for a station wagon. T5 trims get 24 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. T6 AWD trims get 22 mpg in the city and 29 to 31 mpg on the highway.

6

Does the V90 station wagon come with active-assist safety features?

Yes, it is loaded with the latest safety systems. Blind spot monitoring, a rearview camera, lane keep assist, rear parking sensors, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, road-sign recognition, adaptive cruise control and adaptive headlights are all standard systems in the new V90.

All of these hi-tech safety features are utilized by the Pilot Assist semiautonomous driving system. This futuristic feature automatically adjusts the V90 to the same speed as nearby traffic, keeps it in the correct lane, accelerates, brakes and turns where it needs to.

7

How much cargo space does the Volvo V90 have?

The V90 has 19.8 cubic feet of room in a hidden storage compartment beneath the floor in the back. If you fold the back seats down flat, there are 54 cubic feet of space. The back opening is large, too, for easy loading and unloading. Foot-activated liftgate opening is standard on all trims. All you have to do is wave your foot beneath the rear bumper to activate it.

8

Does the Volvo V90 come with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Bluetooth connectivity?

Yes, it does. The new V90 also comes with the Sensus infotainment system, two USB ports SiriusXM Satellite Radio, navigation, music streaming programs like Spotify and 4G LTE. It is all controlled through a highly responsive 9" touchscreen. Safety systems, heating, and cooling are also controlled through the touchscreen.

9

Are there any station wagons that are comparable to the Volvo V90?

The Subaru Outback top trim costs about $10,000 less than the base V90 trim and is almost as nice. The Outback comes with a 256-hp six-cylinder engine under the hood, an excellent sound system, leather upholstered and heated front and back seats, a moonroof and some active-assist safety features. The Outback also has 73 cubic feet of cargo space, has higher ground clearance and gets about the same mileage as the V90. If you can afford the V90, it is worth it for the more luxurious interior and extra features. If you are on a tighter budget, the Outback may be the better option.

The most comparable station wagon is the Audi Allroad. The Allroad has 58.5 cubic feet of cargo space, a 252-hp, four-cylinder turbocharged engine and gets about the same gas mileage, but it isn't quite as luxurious inside as the V90. The V90 costs about $5,500 more than the Allroad, but it is well worth the extra money
