Ford Mondeo Review

Ford’s Mondeo is a great commuter car with room for five average-size adults. It offers smooth handling, a well-cushioned ride over bumpy roads, a decent infotainment system, and some nice hi-tech safety features. The only problem is that it isn’t available in North America. The Mondeo does have an American counterpart, though. It’s the Ford Fusion. The two cars are almost exactly the same. Here are the answers to questions you may have about this great, mid-size car.

What is a Ford Mondeo?

The Mondeo is basically a Ford Fusion. It is a five-passenger, mid-size or large family car. It comes in hatchback-sedan, estate (wagon) or four-door saloon body styles.

Is the Ford Mondeo sold in the United States?

The four-door saloon style sedan has 13.5 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk. The hatchback has 19.4 cubic feet of space with the rear seat upright, or 51 cubic feet with the rear seat folded down. That’s quite a bit of space for a hatchback. The estate models have 18.5 cubic feet with the back seat in place, or 57.5 cubic feet with the back seat folded. The rear seats have a 60/40 split and fold down flat in all body styles.

Is there a Ford Mondeo hybrid?

Is the 2018 Ford Mondeo a fuel-efficient vehicle?

Fuel efficiency varies quite a bit, depending on the model’s engine and wheel size. A nice selection of engines are available, too. There are 1.0-L, 1.5-L and 2.0-L turbocharged engines, 1.6-L and 2.0-L diesel engines in three different horsepower ratings and a hybrid engine. A hatchback Mondeo with 18- or 19-inch wheels and the 1.5-L EcoBoost 158-hp engine gets 32.1 mpg in the city and 56.5 mpg on the highway. That same hatch riding on 16- or 17-inch wheels gets 36.2 mpg in the city and 61.4 mpg on the highway. The most fuel-efficient non-hybrid combination for the hatchback is the 1.5-L Duratorq TDCI ECOnetic 118-hp diesel engine and 16- or 17-inch wheels. That model gets a whopping 68.9 mpg in the city and 85.6 mpg on the highway. The four-door saloon Titanium Edition hybrid with 18-inch wheels gets a combined 70.6 mpge.

What type of standard infotainment features does the Ford Mondeo have?

What active-assist security systems come standard on the Ford Mondeo?

Ford’s Intelligent Protection System, ABS, Electronic Stability Control with Traction Control and Emergency Brake Assist and Active City Stop are standard on all Mondeo trims. The Blind Spot Information system is an available option on all trims. Lane Keeping Alert and Traffic Sign Recognition are standard on all but the lowest trims and are available options for those lower trims. A handy feature that will get you going safely more quickly on cold days is the Quickclear window de-icer. At the touch of a button, the windshield heats up, giving the driver a crystal clear view of the road ahead.

Does the Mondeo have a spacious interior?

Yes, it is fairly roomy inside. The only place that may be a little tight for passengers is the floor area. The front seats are a bit bulky which restricts the space for rear passengers’ feet. Otherwise, the Mondeo is very comfortable for front and rear passengers with plenty of room for adults in the back seat.

Are there similar mid-size cars that are better than the Ford Mondeo?

If you’re shopping in the United States, you’ll want to take a look at the Fusion. It doesn’t have as many engine options, but it has just as many trim options. It’s available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and gets 17 to 23 mpg in the city and 26 to 34 mpg on the highway. Prices for a 2018 Fusion range from $22,215 to $36,990. You could buy a 2017 model, though, and save yourself a little money. They are almost exactly the same models. Take a look at the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, too. They are as good as the Fusion, if not better, and cost about the same.
